Steel profiles (cold-formed)

Cold-formed steel profiles, also known as purlins, are structural elements manufactured from low- or medium-strength steel sheet that undergoes a cold-rolling process. The most commonly used sections in projects are purlins with Z, C, Σ, and U cross-sections, which are characterized by high stiffness and relatively low weight. In addition, our product range includes an extensive selection of C- and Σ-shaped profiles with slightly modified shapes, designated C+ and Σ+, respectively . Purlins can be manufactured from sheet metal of various thicknesses , ranging from 1.5 mm to as much as 3.5 mm.
Cold-formed profiles are used in construction, including, among other things, in wall, roof, and floor structures, as well as support elements in industrial machinery and equipment. Compared to traditional structural elements made of reinforced concrete or wood, cold-formed sections are lighter, easier to process and assemble, and more cost-effective.

What are Z, C, Σ, and U steel profiles?

Cold-formed steel construction profiles are structural elements manufactured from low- or medium-strength steel sheet, which are then subjected to a cold-forming process. These are sections with Z, C, Σ, and U cross-sections that are characterized by high rigidity and relatively low weight, making them widely used in construction and industry. These products vary in appearance and characteristics:

  • Z-shaped steel profile: It is shaped like the letter “Z” and consists of two symmetrical flanges and a web that connects the flanges, giving it high bending stiffness and good shear resistance. Z-profiles are primarily used in the construction of walls, roofs, and floors.
  • C-channel: It is shaped like the letter “C” and consists of a single flange and a web connecting the outer edge of the flange to the opposite inner edge. It is characterized by good bending stiffness as well as moderate shear resistance. It is primarily used as a structural element in walls, floors, and roofs.
  • Σ (sigma) steel profile: It has a shape resembling the letter “S,” consisting of two symmetrical flanges and a web connecting them. It is characterized by high bending stiffness and resistance to deflection, as well as good stiffness in the vertical plane and moderate shear resistance, which is why the Σ profile is primarily used for load-bearing frames, floor beams, roof structures, and other load-bearing elements.
  • U-shaped steel profile: It is shaped like the letter “U”—its shape is somewhat similar to that of a C-shaped profile, but without the characteristic bends at the ends. In terms of shape, it has the fewest cross-sections among the variants in our product line, which results in slightly lower load-bearing capacity, stiffness, and shear resistance. On the other hand, its simpler contour makes it easier to use thicker steel strip (up to 3.5 mm), which can compensate for the reduced stiffness. An unquestionable advantage of the U-profile is its lower unit weight, as well as its cost-effectiveness. It can be manufactured from narrower strips, and thus, in structures where load-bearing requirements are lower, it helps reduce material costs.

The wide variety of strength parameters for the profiles allows for the optimal selection of the required amount of material and greatly simplifies the design of structures.

How do C+ and Σ+ differ from the base versions?

Relatively recently, we launched a fully functional new production line dedicated to cold-formed sections. In addition to the many advantages it offers, it also allows for significantly greater flexibility in programming the embossing, contours, and bends of profiles. These capabilities have resulted in modified versions of the well-known and proven C and Σ profiles.

  • C+ (C plus) steel profile: This is a conceptual development of the C profile and has the same basic shape. However, by using wider strips, distinctive “whiskers” have been added to the edges. These are special bends that further increase the product’s load-bearing capacity and stiffness. As a result, it is possible to achieve similar performance even when using slightly thinner strip. Due to the precision of their manufacture and the scale of the bends, C+ profiles are manufactured from sheet metal no thicker than 2.5 mm.
  • Σ+ (sigma plus) steel profile: Like the basic profile, its shape resembles the letter “S,” but it has two symmetrical flanges connected by a distinctive web. However, distinctive “whiskers” have been added to the ends of the arms—a feature specific to profiles marked with a plus sign. As with C+ purlins, these increase stiffness—both in the vertical plane and in terms of resistance to deflection. Due to these characteristics, it is particularly well-suited for use in load-bearing frames, beams, or roof structures. Importantly, the precision of manufacture offered by the new production line allows for the use of steel strips up to 2.5 mm thick with this profile, which, combined with its cross-section, results in performance parameters similar to those of products made from thicker stock.

Both the C+ and Σ+ profiles are designed to meet market demands for increasingly lighter and more efficient solutions, while maintaining satisfactory architectural parameters such as load-bearing capacity, shear resistance, and transverse stiffness.

Applications of Z, C, Σ, and U Steel Profiles

Z, C, Σ, and U construction profiles are used in various industries and construction applications. These are versatile construction profiles with a range of strength characteristics, allowing them to be optimally adapted to various applications, particularly as:

  • Curtain wall and partition wall construction – these profiles are used to create load-bearing frames that serve as the structural framework for exterior and interior walls
  • Design of floor and eave beams – thanks to their high rigidity and bending strength, Z, C, and Σ profiles are ideal for constructing floor and eave beams
  • wall studs – they are used to create load-bearing frames that serve as studs for partition walls
  • roof purlins – thanks to their rigidity, these profiles can serve as load-bearing elements of the roof
  • warehouse shelving design – thanks to their resistance to vertical loads, these profiles are used as load-bearing components in warehouse shelving.

Cold-formed sections are therefore widely used in the construction of large-scale structures, such as production and industrial facilities, warehouse spaces, and commercial, office, warehouse, and agricultural buildings.

Advantages of Z, C, Σ, and U Steel Profiles

Cold formed Z, C and ? profiles (as well as modified versions, C+ and Σ+) are considered modern building components that enable the rapid assembly of wall studs and roof purlins, as well as structures for photovoltaic panels or industrial machinery, thereby facilitating many construction and structural tasks. They are characterized by:

  • Ease of assembly – steel profiles can be easily assembled in a wide variety of structures, making them very popular in commercial construction
  • Design flexibility – cold-formed sections are available in various shapes and sizes, allowing designers to create custom structural solutions for customers in various market segments
  • dimensional accuracy – they are characterized by very high dimensional accuracy, which means they can be used for precision structures
  • High strength – cold-formed profiles are characterized by very high strength, allowing them to withstand heavy loads without deformation or damage, while also maintaining high corrosion resistance
  • Versatility of use —cold-formed profiles are suitable for quick installation in wall, roof, and floor structures, as well as for use as support elements in industrial machinery and equipment.
  • low cost – the relatively low price of Z, C, Σ, and U profiles compared to other construction products makes them a popular choice in the construction industry.

In practice, cold-formed sections are products that allow for the construction of roof and structural systems with minimal effort and in a short amount of time, and they prove to be extremely useful not only in large-scale structures. Furthermore, the benefits of using cold-formed sections extend to many areas beyond construction and engineering, such as more efficient logistics and the ability to fully recycle the products.
