How do WOOLTECH sandwich panels help reduce heating costs in the winter?

Sandwich panels are construction materials consisting of three layers: two outer protective layers and a middle insulating layer. They are currently one of the most popular and widely used materials in industrial construction. One might even say that it is difficult to imagine industrial construction today without them.

What are WOOLTECH sandwich panels?

WOOLTECH sandwich panels are modern building materials featuring a mineral wool core and metal cladding. In 2022, the Blachy Pruszyński Company introduced an improved product to its lineup—second-generation WOOLTECH sandwich panels. This modification of the existing panels is a proven and well-received product in the construction market. Manufactured using the latest technology, the new wall sandwich panels in the Blachy Pruszyński Company’s lineup are available in four variants: standard wall sandwich panels, PLUS wall sandwich panels with a Hidden joint, ECO panels with lower-density wool and a lower unit weight, and roof panels. The product line is further complemented by acoustic panels, which feature perforations in the inner cladding and provide sound insulation for the room.

The innovation in the new generation of panels is, of course, the improvement in performance, but above all, the creation of a new locking mechanism that ensures a significantly tighter joint and also allows WOOTECH sandwich panels to be joined with comparable PIRTECH panels featuring a polyurethane foam core, which are also available from the Blachy Pruszyński Company. This solution allows the building’s insulation to be tailored to the customer’s specific needs—the required thermal and acoustic insulation, as well as fire resistance ratings, may vary in different parts of the building.

Of course, improving performance is one thing. Aesthetics is another. The sandwich panels currently being manufactured also stand out for the precision with which their components are crafted, so the panels’ aesthetic qualities have improved significantly—especially with flat profiling. This precision is ensured by a modern production line, custom-built to meet specific requirements and utilizing the latest technological solutions, which was commissioned 2.5 years ago.

WOOLTECH sandwich panels from Blachy Pruszyński Company are the ideal solution for those looking for durable, effective, and easy-to-assemble building materials that provide excellent insulation and protection for the building.

Thermal Insulation Properties of Mineral Wool

Mineral wool—both rock wool and glass wool—is one of the most highly regarded insulation materials due to its good insulation properties, which are combined with excellent fire resistance.

  1. Thermal insulation. Mineral wool has good heat-retention properties. This is determined by the thermal conductivity coefficient λ (lambda) for mineral wool, which typically ranges from 0.032 to 0.045 W/(m·K), meaning that it provides effective insulation under various conditions—it reduces heat loss in the winter and limits the heating of rooms in the summer.
  2. Vapor permeability. It is crucial that mineral wool is a vapor-permeable material. It allows water vapor to flow freely, preventing moisture from accumulating inside the structure, which in turn prevents the thermal insulation material from becoming damp and losing its thermal properties. It also prevents the growth of fungi (including mold) and ensures a healthy indoor microclimate. Additionally, reducing moisture buildup inside the building has a positive effect on potential corrosion processes.
  3. Sound insulation. Although the main property of mineral wool is its fire resistance (mineral wool is classified as a completely non-combustible material), it also has exceptional sound-absorbing properties. It helps reduce external noise, which improves acoustic comfort inside the building.

Thanks to these unique properties, mineral wool is used in construction for the thermal and acoustic insulation of walls, roofs, attics, and floors. It is a material that helps achieve high energy efficiency in buildings and improves occupant comfort. At the same time, it significantly improves fire safety in buildings.

The Benefits of WOOLTECH Sandwich Panels in Winter

The WOOLTECH sandwich panels currently in production offer many advantages that make them particularly effective in winter conditions.

Good thermal insulation

The mineral wool core provides high thermal insulation, which helps retain heat inside the building. Second-generation mineral wool panels have a thermal transmittance coefficient ranging from 0.39 W/(m²/K) to as low as 0.17 W/(m²/K). A thermal insulation coefficient at this level helps maintain a stable indoor temperature even under relatively harsh winter conditions. Using these panels reduces the energy required for heating in the winter and for air conditioning in the summer. This translates to lower energy costs. However, it is worth noting that if a building’s thermal insulation is the top priority, PIRTECH sandwich panels—which feature a pentane-blown polyisocyanurate foam core—are a better solution in such cases. This solution offers significantly higher insulation performance compared to mineral wool, but this comes at the expense of vapor permeability and fire resistance.

Fire resistance

Let’s start with the fact that mineral wool is non-flammable, which gives WOOLTECH panels high fire resistance. These products are classified as NRO, A2-s1, d01. During a fire, the mineral wool helps prevent the spread of flames, thereby increasing the building’s safety. In terms of fire safety, roof sandwich panels and wall sandwich panels with a Mineral Wool core have been classified, based on fire tests, for their reaction to fire, fire spread rate, and fire resistance in accordance with PN-EN 13501, PN-90/B-08267, PN-B-02851, PN-EN 13501. These characteristics make Blachy Pruszyński Company panels ideal for insulating residential and utility buildings, usable attic spaces under pitched roofs, suspended ceilings, and partition wall fillers. They are indispensable in buildings where fire safety requirements are very high.

Resistance to moisture and corrosion

The exterior metal cladding provides the panels with excellent mechanical properties, making them durable and resistant to various weather conditions. The cladding is also protected by anti-corrosion coatings that shield the panels from moisture and prevent corrosion. This ensures a long service life for the panels, even in humid and winter conditions.

Excellent airtightness

The new locking mechanism in WOOLTECH’s new-generation panels, combined with the new tongue-and-groove milling, provides excellent airtightness, which prevents cold air and moisture from penetrating into the building.

Assembly in Winter Conditions

WOOLTECH sandwich panels are lightweight and easy to assemble, even in harsh winter conditions at low temperatures. This allows construction work to continue regardless of the weather.

How do WOOLTECH panels help reduce heating energy demand?

WOOLTECH panels feature a mineral wool core, which significantly reduces heating energy demand thanks to its excellent insulating properties. It helps retain heat inside the building, minimizing heat loss through the walls and roof. Furthermore, the wide range of WOOLTECH panel options—for both roofs and walls—allows you to select the type and thickness of the panel to match the building’s technical requirements. WOOLTECH Roof panels are available with core thicknesses ranging from 100 to as much as 250 mm, while WOOLTECH Wall panels range from 60 to 240 mm.

How do WOOLTECH panels reduce heat loss in buildings?

First and foremost, WOOLTECH panels are designed to provide a continuous layer of insulation that eliminates or significantly reduces thermal bridges. Thermal bridges are points in a structure through which heat can escape more quickly. Reducing them significantly improves a building’s energy efficiency. This is facilitated by the special tongue-and-groove joints in WOOLTECH panels, which ensure a perfect seal at the joints. This minimizes heat loss caused by leaks. An airtight facade prevents cold air from entering the interior and keeps the heat inside.

Let’s return to one more property of mineral wool—specifically, its vapor permeability. It allows water vapor to flow freely. This helps maintain a dry and healthy indoor environment while preventing moisture from accumulating in the insulation, which could compromise its insulating properties.

How does using WOOLTECH panels affect heating bills?

Investors are likely interested in how the use of WOOLTECH panels manufactured by the Blachy Pruszyński Company helps reduce heating bills. It is therefore worth emphasizing once again that the high thermal insulation properties of WOOLTECH panels effectively trap heat inside the building, which means less energy is needed to maintain a comfortable temperature. Additionally, the insulation boards are moisture-resistant, which prevents the insulation from becoming damp and losing its insulating properties. Dry and healthy insulation helps maintain consistently high energy efficiency.

Another important point is that, thanks to their design and airtightness, WOOLTECH panels minimize heat loss through walls and roofs. Less heat loss means the heating system doesn’t have to work as hard, which leads to savings on heating bills. In addition, better thermal insulation results in a more even temperature inside the building. This means fewer temperature fluctuations, which increases thermal comfort and allows for more efficient management of the heating system.

In summary, using WOOLTECH panels leads to significant savings on heating bills, increasing the building’s energy efficiency and improving the thermal comfort of its occupants. WOOLTECH panels are an investment that delivers long-term benefits. Thanks to their durability and weather resistance, these insulation boards retain their insulating properties for many years, which means consistent savings on heating bills.
