How to choose the right roof membrane?

A properly working roof should protect residents from rainfall, wind and sun – this is its task since the dawn of history. The modern roof should fulfill several additional functions, because it is created not only by the roofing, but also a series of accessories invisible from the outside, among which the roof membrane plays a key role. Thanks to it, the roof structure will not be damp, the residents will not bother too much heating in the summer or cool the attic in winter, and the operation of the house will be cheaper, which translates into heating costs.

In practice, the condition for trouble -free use of the roof system is the use of appropriate vapor barrier in combination with a pre -mating membrane (MWK) with high vapor permeability.

What is a roof membrane?

The role of a roof membrane can be described as an invisible guardian of home warmth and climate for the eye. It is responsible for the tightness of the roof and its ventilation, from the outside (the air flow leads the condensate, which always accumulates under the late) and from the inside of the building (it drains the water vapor that is naturally produced by a household). Not every roof membrane is the same, so it’s worth knowing what parameters testify to its high quality to make the right choice from various materials available on the market.

What is the roof membrane made of?

The roof membrane is a light product made of polyethylene or polypropylene. Products of the best quality have layered structure and mesh reinforcements. The modern roof membrane has at least three layers: one that passes the water vapor that accumulates in the interior of the house, the other, which protects the central layer from damage, and the third, which performs an additional function, e.g. protection against harmful UV radiation .

What is the roof membrane for?

There are several very important functions for the roof membrane for the proper roof operation. First of all, it protects roof thermal insulation (e.g. mineral wool) against moisture, which weakens its insulation effectiveness. Secondly, it protects the wooden roof structure from wetting from rain or melting snow, thirdly, thanks to the microsphorification, it passes the water vapor accumulating from the inside of the roof in the direction outside, which also harms the truss and the insulation layer.

The type of roof membrane should be selected for the type and function of the roofing, because e.g. ceramic tile and metal roofing tiles behave in different ways under the influence of weather conditions.

Advantages of a roof membrane

The roof membrane is an essential element of an efficient roof system, which is worth deciding at the early stage of building the house. The use of a high -quality membrane, properly selected for the type of covering and purpose of the building, brings several important benefits:

  • The roof membrane protects the inside of the roof (thermal insulation materials, trusses, walls) against the destructive effects of rain, snow and dust or the effects of leaky roofing
  • It allows for better insulation of the roof and prevents the heat from being removed from the insulating layer
  • Responsible for draining water vapor and air exchange under the roof, which eliminates moisture habitats.

In order for the roof membranes to fulfill their functions, you should handle them in a way that will not expose them to mechanical damage in transport or on the construction site (such as cutting the surface). Although as standard, the material is protected against the negative effects of UV radiation, the roof membrane for solar exposure cannot be subjected to too long and close the roof as soon as possible.

Types of roof membranes

Roof membranes can fulfill various tasks, so they should be properly selected to the place where they will be arranged. We distinguish:

  • low -parotable pre -covering membranes (25 -80 g/m2; SD 05 -100 m); They are laid on the rafters, but require leaving a ventilation gap to ensure air exchange;
  • High -parotable pre -covering membranes allow roof breathing; They are mounted directly under the outer roof cover, directly on the rafters; Available in various weight (e.g. a three -layer premium roof membrane with a weight of 170 g/m2 of Pruszyński).
  • roof membranes with rigid sheathing (so -called formwork, weight 130 – 150 g/m2); The larger weight translates into increased strength of mechanical damage (e.g. V 135G membrane from Blachy Pruszyński replacing the traditional method, i.e. the use of felt on full formwork).

Paroisolation films are complemented by roof membranes. Layed from the attic side and mounted on a frame supporting thermal insulation (they are usually covered with a drywall used for slants) protect the roof against moisture penetration from the inside of the building.

Roof membrane – what parameters to look for?

The quality of roof membranes is determined by their technical parameters, of which the most important are:

  • Vapor permeability, determined in G m2 or number placed at the SD symbol. The first indicator determines how many grams of water it can filter for 1 m2 of roof foil within one day (range 800-4000 g/m2/24 h means material with increased immunity). The SD factor determines the thickness of the air layer, which puts the film the same resistance as the water vapor (films with a high level of vapor permeability have a SD coefficient 0.06-0.0012, with a smaller number means a higher quality membrane);
  • Resistance to tearing, which can occur when laying and covering the membrane; good quality membranes have resistance referred to as 150 N/5 cm (when ripping the longitudinal) and 100 N/5 cm (at the transverse); Higher value means greater immunity.
  • Resistance to UV radiation, i.e. how many days the foil exposed to the sun will keep its parameters (usually from 30 days to 12 months).

In addition, the high -parotable roof membrane has other parameters that the investor should take into account to buy the appropriate product. These include:

  • Weight, i.e. a weight of 1 square material. The thicker, the more durable the membrane. Membranes with a weight of 100 – 200 g m2 are commonly used on the market;
  • Temperature resistance, i.e. strength to low and high temperatures (on average from -40 to + 90%) – the greater the range, the greater the resistance, which is particularly important for tin roofing;
  • Water resistance, i.e. resistance to permeation expressed with the symbol W1 (good) or W2 (very good).

How to choose a roof membrane?

There are many similar products on the roof membrane market, so you should trust reputable manufacturers and recommendations of the roofing manufacturer. The hood or roof baskets are places where various assembly activities are performed, and thus are more exposed to accidental damage. Therefore, two varieties of membranes, i.e. standard and increased durability, should be used on a complex roof. In practice, this means that an investment in a high -quality membrane arranged at a high level of performance allows you to enjoy a roof that maintains tightness from the outside, draining water vapor and enabling installation while maintaining a ventilation gap.

The most important factors of roof membranes are: vapor permeability, thanks to which water vapor can leave the thermal insulation layer and roof structure, as well as tear resistance and resistance to UV radiation, the values of which are within set limits. The less steep the roof, the more recommended the roof membrane weight is recommended.

How to correctly put the Pruszyński roof membrane – step by step

The Pruszyński high -parotable roof membrane is a product arranged directly on thermal insulation, and its assembly should always be done in combination with a counterfeit. It should be remembered that the assembly of the membrane takes place after all construction works and installations, including roofing inlets, sewage swing and flashings.

  1. The membrane should be developed parallel to the hood, slightly stretching it – the bottom edge of the foil should end with a hood baking tray.
  2. Another membrane belt is arranged with a plant marked with a print.
  3. The membrane is nailed to the rafters.
  4. Then nail countertops and patches. Opportunity provides a distance between the membrane and patches, enabling roof ventilation.
  5. For elements overlapping the roof slope, the membrane must be cut and attached to the sides of the protruding element (e.g. roof window, chimney, etc.). An additional gutter -shaped membrane belt should be installed above the cut -out hole.

The high indicators of the vapor permeability of the Pruszyński membrane make that there is no need to leave the ventilation gap between the membrane and thermal insulation. With high -parottled membranes, it is possible to stick the plants at the ridge and the eaves, which protects against the penetration of the wind roof and against heat loss.

Does the roof membrane pass water?

The roof membrane can not pass water, but it should drain much smaller than the water of the water vapor molecule, which accumulates in the building, e.g. during cooking, washing or bathing.

Can a roof membrane leak?

The roof membrane cannot leak because its task is to isolate the insulation layer of the roof from moisture. Water leakage means that the product or membrane has been damaged incorrectly installed, e.g. no wide enough bookmarks were left.

How to stick a hole in the roof membrane?

Slight mechanical damage to the roof membrane can simply be sealed with a specialized, waterproof butyl tape. If the damage is greater, it will be necessary to patch the hole by replacing the damaged belt with free from defects and damage, maintaining the appropriate plant during gluing.

Is the roof membrane necessary?

The high -parotable roof membrane is necessary in residential buildings at utility attics and those that should be dry and ventilated inside. Its assembly is to protect the interior of the roof against moisture and guarantee the proper functioning of the roof for many years.

In the case of roofs with an attic and in uninsulated roofs of industrial or storage buildings, a low -transparent membrane will be better suited, due to the low cost and high mechanical strength.

How much does the roof membrane cost – what does the price depend on?

The price depends on the thickness of the membrane and its vapor -permeable properties. The better quality the material is laid on the roof, the greater the guarantee of its proper functioning and life. The highest price is high -parked multi -layer membranes with elevated weight (on average 4.50 PLN/square meter), and the smallest low -porplavular membrane with low weight (average cost 3.50 PLN/square meter).
