Generally <strong>, the pre-covering is installed to allow condensed moisture to drain away, to shield the entire insulation with a protective layer, and to protect the attic space from moisture<\/strong>. Additionally, thanks to the use of a special protective (hydrophobic) coating, the waterproofing layer effectively protects the structure from rainwater and meltwater in critical areas of the main roofing, supporting the proper functioning of the roof assembly.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In pitched roofs, the roof slope is particularly important, as it determines how water flows and places specific demands on the waterproofing layer. The type of roofing material is equally important, since different materials have varying requirements in terms of watertightness and resistance to localized leaks. Based on this, roof membranes are selected that work in conjunction with the primary roofing material and allow for the efficient drainage of any leaks, thereby ensuring a watertight roof under various operating conditions.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proper selection of waterproofing materials, taking into account the appropriate quality of the membrane, is crucial for the durability of the entire structure. In the case of pitched roofs, it is also important to prevent the infiltration of cold air, which affects both the airtightness of the roof and the conditions inside the building. In such roofs, <a href=\"https:\/\/pruszynski.com.pl\/produkt\/akcesoria\/akcesoria-dachowe\/membrany-dachowe-venstsol\/\">the membrane<\/a> is exposed to localized stresses and mechanical damage in critical areas: fastener attachment points, roof edges, and the areas around chimneys and roof windows. Therefore, for rigid sheathing, highly vapor-permeable membranes with performance characteristics that ensure safety are primarily used: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>tear strength:<\/strong> 200\u2013300 N\/5 cm,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>puncture resistance:<\/strong> \u2265 500\u2013700 g,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vapor permeability: 200\u2013400 g\/m\u00b2\/24 h <\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Waterproof:<\/strong> 100%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lower-quality membranes may not provide adequate mechanical strength or effective moisture drainage, which jeopardizes the durability of the structure and the protection of the thermal insulation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bituminous roofing felt can also be laid on the sheathing, but it is rarely used in modern construction. It is most commonly used for roofs with a low pitch or for unused attics. Bituminous roofing felt is less flexible and less vapor-permeable than membranes, which is why it is not recommended for roofs with habitable attics.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roofs without sheathing (membrane laid directly on the rafters)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, the pre-covering is not supported by a rigid substrate, so the membrane moves freely between the rafters and is less susceptible to localized punctures from below. Loads occur mainly during roof assembly at the fastener attachment points. In such roofs, highly vapor-permeable membranes are primarily used, which can come into contact with the insulation layer without a ventilation gap. Roof membranes with lower vapor permeability are also acceptable; however, in such cases, a ventilation gap must be left above the roof insulation to ensure proper vapor discharge and ventilation of the space beneath the roofing.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typical technical specifications for membranes used in formwork-free roofs:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tensile strength: 150\u2013250 <\/strong>N\/5 cm,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>puncture resistance:<\/strong> \u2265 400\u2013500 g,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>vapor permeability: 200\u2013400 <\/strong>g\/m\u00b2\/24 h,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Waterproof:<\/strong> 100%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, this means that the mechanical strength is slightly lower than in roofs with boarding, while the ability to wick away moisture and proper ventilation of the space under the roofing are of key importance.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"kat-nachylenia-polaci-a-warstwa-krycia\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roof pitch and type of roofing material versus the choice of pre-covering<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roof pitch directly affects the length of time water remains in contact with the waterproofing material. The choice of membranes is supported by their ability to drain any leaks and their high mechanical strength, which ensures the roof\u2019s durability and protects the attic space. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A small angle:<\/strong> water runs off more slowly and remains under the roofing for longer, which is why, in addition to complete watertightness (roof watertightness class W1), the durability of the material is crucial. This means using pre-covering membranes with a weight of at least 140\u2013160 g\/m\u00b2. Additionally, it is worth examining the membrane\u2019s tear strength, which should be at least 200 N\/5 cm, and its puncture resistance, which should be \u2265 500 g.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Steep pitch:<\/strong> With a steeper roof pitch, water runs off the roof surface more quickly, which reduces the amount of time it spends in contact with the waterproofing. The waterproofing requirements remain the same, but it is permissible to use membranes with slightly lower weight and strength\u2014provided that the membrane ensures proper vapor transmission from the insulation layer in addition to being watertight. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The type of roof covering affects the loads acting on the membrane at the attachment points and how it performs under the roof covering.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ceramic and concrete roof tiles, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/pruszynski.com.pl\/en\/produkt\/roofs\/panel-modular-roof-tile\/\">metal roof tiles:<\/a><\/strong> The membrane is subject to localized stress at the fastening points; therefore, it should have a tensile strength of at least 150\u2013250 N\/5 cm and a puncture resistance of \u2265 400\u2013500 g.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flat sheets, including standing-seam flat sheets: <\/strong>Due to higher pressures at the fastening points, membranes with increased strength of \u2265 200\u2013300 N\/5 cm and puncture resistance of \u2265 500\u2013700 g are required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In any case, the waterproofing material must ensure proper waterproofing and the drainage of any leaks that may occur beneath the roofing.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"wenty;acja-polaci-fundamentem-trwalosci-dachu\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Roof Ventilation \u2013 The Key to a Long-Lasting Roof<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roof ventilation is <strong>essential to the durability of a roof<\/strong>. Proper airflow beneath the roofing material is not just a manufacturer\u2019s recommendation\u2014it is <strong>a technical requirement<\/strong> that ensures the structure and insulation remain dry throughout the roof\u2019s service life. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is ventilation necessary?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the roof covering, between the pre-covering and the main roofing material, water vapor naturally forms from the insulation and thermal insulation. Without proper ventilation, the vapor condenses under the roof covering, leading to: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>moisture buildup under metal sheets and roof tiles,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>moisture in the thermal insulation (a 50\u201370% reduction in its performance),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the growth of mold and fungi, which pose a health risk to residents,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accelerated corrosion of metal components (sheet metal, rafters),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>premature wear and tear of the roof coverings and the need to replace them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attention!<\/strong>  The ventilation system must remove moisture before it begins to condense. To prevent this, ventilation gaps must be left between the membrane and the roofing material. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ventilation System Components \u2013 Practical Solutions<\/h3>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Air intakes (on the range hood)<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pruszynski.com.pl\/en\/produkt\/accessories\/standard-flashings\/ventilation-eaves-batten\/\">A ventilation eaves batten<\/a> is a required component. It ensures the free flow of air through the ventilation duct.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional assembly requirements:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The first row of metal roofing panels or roof tiles should extend at least 2 cm beyond the eave\u2014it must not touch the battens or the membrane.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This requirement cannot be overlooked\u2014without it, the airflow will be insufficient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Air vents (on the Ridge)<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pruszynski.com.pl\/en\/produkt\/accessories\/roof-accessories\/ridge-tape\/\">A ridge tape with mesh<\/a> (e.g., VENTSOL 230) is a required component. It seals the joint between the roof slopes and provides ventilation. Mesh tape (not nonwoven fabric!) allows air to flow while protecting against:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>snow accumulation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rain seepage,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dust and dirt getting under the covering.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key requirements:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On both plain and sloped ridges, ridge tape must be used without exception,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tape is applied starting from the edge of the roof toward the valley or the sloped ridge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is prohibited!<\/strong>  Use of ridge tapes with nonwoven fabric\u2014these must be mesh tapes that allow air to flow. Nonwoven fabric blocks ventilation and leads to condensation. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pre-Covering Membranes and Ventilation \u2013 System-Wide Coordination<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pre-covering and the Ventilation system form a single, integrated system\u2014the pre-covering alone is not enough. Even a well-chosen membrane (e.g., one with high vapor permeability of 250\u2013300 g\/m\u00b2\/24h) allows water vapor to pass through, but it must be able to channel that vapor to the ventilation gaps. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Membranes with high vapor permeability (200\u2013400 g\/m\u00b2\/24h) work most effectively in systems with efficient ventilation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lack of ventilation leads to condensation under the roofing membrane\u2014even the best membrane cannot eliminate this risk,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proper ventilation allows any leaks to dry out and reduces the moisture load on the membrane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key takeaway:<\/strong> Selecting the membrane and designing the ventilation system are one and the same task\u2014these elements cannot be optimized separately. Ventilation without a good membrane = a continued risk of leaks. Membranes with a high degree of vapor permeability (vapor permeability: 200\u2013400 g\/m\u00b2\/24 h), which ensure adequate water vapor transmission and can be installed directly on top of the insulation, protecting the thermal insulation and the interior of the building from moisture. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unused attic:<\/strong> Moisture control requirements are less stringent because thermal insulation is usually installed on the ceiling, and the space under the roof is not heated. Any break in continuity or installation error can lead to leaks. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In roofs with simple geometry, the requirements are less stringent, whereas in complex roofs, the waterproofing layer plays a more critical role\u2014it absorbs water in areas subject to increased stress and safely drains it beyond the roof\u2019s perimeter.
