However, there are technical differences between the various materials that affect their properties. Installation costs are also quite important to us as investors. Choosing gutters is not easy. Depending on what our priorities are—cost, durability, aesthetics, or the unique characteristics of our roof—we have various options to choose from. Should we choose metal or plastic gutters? What are their pros and cons? Find out what you need to know about them.

Plastic Gutters

In the past, PVC gutters—made of polyvinyl chloride—would warp quickly in high temperatures and fade, which is why they were not trusted by investors. Today, plastic gutters are made of higher-quality plastic that withstands even extreme weather conditions quite well. Plastic gutters are completely corrosion-resistant and, when properly installed, will last for years. Plastic gutters are manufactured using a co-extrusion process, which increases their strength; they are also significantly more resistant to weather conditions and UV radiation, and retain their color and luster longer than in the past. PVC gutters can have a round or square cross-section, and the color palette allows you to match the shade to your roofing material.

Coated metal gutters

This is the most popular type of metal gutter. The core is made of high-quality stainless steel and coated on the outside with a polyurethane coating. This combination gives steel gutters high durability—steel is rigid, while polyurethane is flexible, corrosion-resistant, and resistant to fading from sunlight. Steel gutters can be round or square, with various cross-sectional depths; the deeper they are, the better the protection against overflow, even during heavy rainfall. This type of gutter works well both on buildings with an eave and in a Concealed system, where they are not visible on the building’s facade. Due to their durability, steel gutter systems are recommended in areas with heavy snowfall.

Galvanized metal gutters

They are less expensive than coated metal gutters, yet they are just as durable and functional. The core is made of galvanized steel. The zinc layer forms a passive coating that protects against corrosion even after scratching. Due to the natural color of the steel core, they are mainly chosen for structures such as garages or carports, but there’s no reason why they can’t be installed in a residential building if its architecture complements this minimalist style. Galvanized gutters are highly efficient and cost-effective, which is why they are particularly recommended for industrial facilities.

An alloy of titanium and aluminum, with added chromium, molybdenum, and manganese, provides the gutters with exceptional resistance to weather conditions, even in harsh environments with high levels of pollution or salinity. The natural layer of aluminum oxide that forms on the metal core protects against corrosion, while chromium protects against erosion caused by salt.

It naturally develops a patina—a layer of oxide—which eliminates the risk of corrosion even on cut edges. Titanium also provides enhanced resistance to aggressive environments, such as acid rain. The gutters themselves have an elegant appearance.

This product stands out not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its exceptional durability. Due to their high resistance to corrosion and weathering, copper gutter systems are ideal for locations where durability and appearance are crucial—such as historic or religious buildings. The assembly of these gutters requires specialized knowledge and precise skills, which is why they are recommended for professionals. The high price reflects the quality of the material and the exceptional properties of copper, which develops a noble patina over time, giving the building a unique character.

Which gutters should you choose?

Metal or plastic? They all have their pros and cons. The choice of specific gutters depends on many factors. With metal systems, we have more flexibility; there are various types of gutters—some more economical than others, with varying durability, and suited to different building characteristics—while plastic gutters do not offer this range of options. However, you should always base your decision on your individual needs and budget.

The budget we can allocate to the purchase is certainly an important factor in the decision-making process. If price is the deciding factor, the options are plastic or galvanized gutters, though the latter will have a significantly longer lifespan. The location of the building may also be an equally important factor when choosing gutters. Homes located in areas with heavy snowfall should have metal gutters, and care must be taken to ensure that the gutter hooks are spaced closely enough together. In coastal or industrial areas, it’s a good idea to invest in titanium-aluminum or Titan-zinc gutters, which are resistant to harsh environments. Other options may require repair or replacement after a few years due to erosion.

If the house is located in a neutral climate zone, let’s prioritize both aesthetics and durability. Metal gutters are inherently more durable and stronger than plastic ones, and their colors can easily be matched to various roof coverings.
